Some folks have asked for a more complete description of the tour. Here it is:

We depart Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport, go by the Brooklyn Piers and south in Buttermilk Channel between Brooklyn & Governors Island, passing Atlantic Basin. We go further south and nose into Erie Basin, a large barge & tug facility and home to IKEA's Brooklyn store on the former site of Todd Shipyard and a now filled in graving dock.

We then cross Upper New York Harbor, passing numerous moored barges and tugs to the entrance to the Kill Van Kull, a waterway that separates Staten Island and Bayonne, passing tanker terminals, tug yards, and a large ship repair facility with floating drydocks. We proceed westerly and pass under the Bayonne Bridge, turning north to enter Newark Bay, home of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, the largest collection of huge container ports on the East Coast of the US.

We come back out through the Kill Van Kull again, then north passing the end of the Military Ocean Terminal with its large active graving dock, then go by Global Marine Terminal just north. We pause at the end at the Statue of Liberty (around sunset) and then proceed to the tip of Manhattan and back to Pier 16.

The entire narrated trip takes 2 hours.

Special Circumnavigation of Staten Island

A 4+ Hour Cruise - Saturday 8 August 2009

Our comfortable charter boat departs from Pier 17, (South Street Seaport), Manhattan. We travel south to the entrance to the Kill Van Kull, make our way slowly by tanker terminals, tugboat yards, Sailor's Snug Harbor, floating drydocks, and under the Bayonne Bridge to Shooter's Island. We then travel south alongside New York Container Terminal and into Arthur Kill. We continue south passing more terminals and yards, as well as the graveyard of ships (what's left of it) and the entrance to Fresh Kills, former garbage landfill on its way to becoming a large park. We see more terminals and tugs and boat yards until we reach the southern tip at Tottenville. Then we make our way up the east coast of Staten Island, on the majestic run through The Narrows and under the Verazzano Bridge. We'll be passing the former Navy Terminal, "Home Port" at Stapleton, FDNY's nearly historic fireboat Firefighter, Miller's Launch and the home of the Staten Island Ferry. Then back home by way of the Statue of Liberty.

We will sail under five major bridges, which will also be discussed. Bayonne Bridge, Arthur Kill Railroad Lift Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, and Verazzano Bridge.

Fully Narrated. Maps will be provided.

The tour will take in excess of 4 hours.

The price is only $79 - a real bargain considering the length.
